Mrs Mahoney. Yesterday I attended Maths conf 17; my 2nd maths conf and it was just as brilliant as my first. Maths conf is the most valuable maths CPD that I have taken part in. At my first Maths Conf in Manchester I met some other maths teachers the night before at the pre conference drinks, I then spent the Maths conf 15 with these people and followed each other on twitter. It was great to see that they were also attended Maths Conf 17 and so yesterday I met back up with these teachers and spend the Maths conf with them again. What was lovely about yesterday was that the day kicked off with maths speed dating so if you had come to the conference alone this would be a great way to meet a few people and exchange some excellent teaching ideas. We were asked to find another teacher in the room, sit down with them and in 2 minutes talk about a resource that we use in the classroom. Once the two minutes was up the other person had 2 minutes to explain their resource. Once both partners had explained their resources you found another person in the room to repeat the process with.
I do it a bit differently than it has been done in math classes previously. They each work on individual whiteboards, but talk together while working. I walk around and answer questions while they work.

Getting Together: Science Speed Dating
When preparing a resource to take and share at mathsconf4, I wanted to share something which I find valuable and seems to make a difference to pupils learning. The resources I use are for groups with little or no understanding of the connections between the three as they start off quite basic. They then use their art work to write the fraction, percentage and decimal of each colour used. The advantage of using this resource has been to consolidate the connection between the fraction out of to the percentage.
The next step is to move onto a 50 grid, 25 grid, 20 grid and 10 grid, and hence the need to change the fraction to out of in order to write the percentage. Accompanying the grids are some fraction, percentage and decimal tables, with an extra column for the fraction out of , for pupils to practise their conversions.
Even if I had known no one at all the maths conference had the perfect ice breaker with the “mathematical speed dating” later on. More on that.
One of the goals that I set for myself this year was to try to improve my formative assessment practices. Overall, I think the results have been positive. Logically, working on formative assessment has led me to question some of my summative assessment practices too. To begin with, I am not sure I know the best way to prepare students for a test.
At times, I feel like the valuable classroom minutes I spend reviewing for our class tests are mostly wasted. In fact, a fellow math teacher at my school has decided against spending a day on test review in favor of using those extra days to get to more new material. For the last test that I gave, I did provide a day to review. My students completed what I call a gallery walk.

Speed dating is something that has never really held much appeal in the past. The frustration of being ignored after what seemed like another promising date had led us to take action and look at new ways of meeting people. Last week the staff at Upton shared their good practice through the medium of speed dating. Due to confidence issues I find some students are reluctant to engage in practical tasks such as drawing. What would be ideal is something that does all of them in one or two hours.
