Maths Speed Dating Careers Event

Mrs Mahoney. Yesterday I attended Maths conf 17; my 2nd maths conf and it was just as brilliant as my first. Maths conf is the most valuable maths CPD that I have taken part in. At my first Maths Conf in Manchester I met some other maths teachers the night before at the pre conference drinks, I then spent the Maths conf 15 with these people and followed each other on twitter. It was great to see that they were also attended Maths Conf 17 and so yesterday I met back up with these teachers and spend the Maths conf with them again. What was lovely about yesterday was that the day kicked off with maths speed dating so if you had come to the conference alone this would be a great way to meet a few people and exchange some excellent teaching ideas. We were asked to find another teacher in the room, sit down with them and in 2 minutes talk about a resource that we use in the classroom. Once the two minutes was up the other person had 2 minutes to explain their resource. Once both partners had explained their resources you found another person in the room to repeat the process with.

I do it a bit differently than it has been done in math classes previously. They each work on individual whiteboards, but talk together while working. I walk around and answer questions while they work.

Yes, Oxford is an established city of years, but in light of all the changes we are currently experiencing in terms of climate change and the environment, as sea levels rise and flooding increases, fires rage, and we face severe drought and weather extremes, what will happen to Oxford? Dr Comerford is explaining the concept behind Only Expansion, a soundscape tour of Oxford with headphones, which starts tomorrow, one of the more lateral and interactive experiences in the current IF Oxford Festival of Science and Ideas line-up.

Designed specially for the city by the renowned Duncan Speakman, an international composer and sound artist, it boasts an audio narrative that suggests what the future might entail. We are trying to show it in a new light, through sound, set against an urban background of our daily lives. Since the original science festival was reimagined in , the new schedule endeavours to introduce many other innovative and exciting concepts for us to enjoy.

From multi-sensory art, to interactive dance or coding, the team aims to change out viewpoint on what science encapsulates, and its endless possibilities. And while some subjects have been seen as dry in the past, new life has been breathed into specific areas. Things are moving on much quicker now thanks to social media — the pace is changing so we need to keep up. But the other main consideration is to ensure people enjoy the festival and to get their voice heard so on one hand you can listen to thorny debates about AI or go to physics in the pub or a comedy night.

Getting Together: Science Speed Dating

When preparing a resource to take and share at mathsconf4, I wanted to share something which I find valuable and seems to make a difference to pupils learning. The resources I use are for groups with little or no understanding of the connections between the three as they start off quite basic. They then use their art work to write the fraction, percentage and decimal of each colour used. The advantage of using this resource has been to consolidate the connection between the fraction out of to the percentage.

The next step is to move onto a 50 grid, 25 grid, 20 grid and 10 grid, and hence the need to change the fraction to out of in order to write the percentage. Accompanying the grids are some fraction, percentage and decimal tables, with an extra column for the fraction out of , for pupils to practise their conversions.

Even if I had known no one at all the maths conference had the perfect ice breaker with the “mathematical speed dating” later on. More on that.

One of the goals that I set for myself this year was to try to improve my formative assessment practices. Overall, I think the results have been positive. Logically, working on formative assessment has led me to question some of my summative assessment practices too. To begin with, I am not sure I know the best way to prepare students for a test.

At times, I feel like the valuable classroom minutes I spend reviewing for our class tests are mostly wasted. In fact, a fellow math teacher at my school has decided against spending a day on test review in favor of using those extra days to get to more new material. For the last test that I gave, I did provide a day to review. My students completed what I call a gallery walk.

Courses will begin on schedule in Autumn and we look forward to seeing new and returning students in person, if travel and visa arrangements allow. Current students will receive sign up information via email at the start of the new academic year.

Speed dating is something that has never really held much appeal in the past. The frustration of being ignored after what seemed like another promising date had led us to take action and look at new ways of meeting people. The Manchester based dating blogger Cubic Garden had mentioned to me that he had more success meeting suitable dates speed dating than he had internet dating. So we figured it was worth putting any preconceptions to one side and giving it a go.

There are a couple of regular speed dating nights on in Manchester , each running nights in different venues on different days of the week. We needed to find a night where we both fitted into the same age bracket, which happened to be Elite Speed Dating, which runs on Saturdays at the Circle club. When I mentioned I was going to my friend Alison, she told me about a lesbian speed-dating night her ex-girlfriend had put on a few years back.

On the way to the club, Dan was also growing increasingly conscious of what to ask when it came to opening questions. It was beginning to dawn on him that this was a night of intensive small talk. But we had arrived and there was no point backing out. Walking in, to our relief, there was a real mix of people, and to our relief you got a free glass of champagne to calm any nerves. We sat down and registered.

My old married name was on the list due to its being connected to my PayPal account.

Last week the staff at Upton shared their good practice through the medium of speed dating. Due to confidence issues I find some students are reluctant to engage in practical tasks such as drawing. By allowing use of the app it is a virtual kiln where students can add pattern and colour etc , students are dealing with an interface they are familiar with virtuality. The quick and effective results they achieve on the app used as a starter.

Chris McKinlay was folded into a cramped fifth-floor cubicle in UCLA’s math sciences building, lit by a single bulb and the glow from his monitor. The subject: large-scale data processing and parallel numerical methods. While the computer chugged, he clicked open a second window to check his OkCupid inbox. McKinlay, a lanky year-old with tousled hair, was one of about 40 million Americans looking for romance through websites like Match.

He’d sent dozens of cutesy introductory messages to women touted as potential matches by OkCupid’s algorithms. Most were ignored; he’d gone on a total of six first dates. On that early morning in June , his compiler crunching out machine code in one window, his forlorn dating profile sitting idle in the other, it dawned on him that he was doing it wrong. He’d been approaching online matchmaking like any other user. Instead, he realized, he should be dating like a mathematician.

OkCupid was founded by Harvard math majors in , and it first caught daters’ attention because of its computational approach to matchmaking. Members answer droves of multiple-choice survey questions on everything from politics, religion, and family to love, sex, and smartphones. The closer to percent—mathematical soul mate—the better.

What would be ideal is something that does all of them in one or two hours. It has helped capture those multi-trajectory needs and had another subject teacher coming down to ask about how to do it in their subject as the students declared for its benefits in their following lessons. Each pair is allocated a different sub-heading topic to work on.

They select a question by a throw of the dice one dice if there are Qs, 2 dice if there are etc. The timer starts and they write down all they know on that topic in the 3 minutes allocated bullet-pointed list or annotated diagram. One side of the desks is then asked to move 2 places down the row; the one remaining is asked to move on to the next category of topic questions with their new partner — and roll the dice to begin a new round.

On the occasions where we had an odd number of students, I paired up with them and scored it, which gave a chance to have one-to-one discussions with different members of the group throughout the exercise. Of course….. There is no reason this could not be adapted for GCSE groups, but I would use collaborative pairs of students versus another pair in order to organise it manageably. ON my first date with Mark, he asked how long it had been since my last relationship. I looked at the table, cupping my hand around my beer. I had always hated this question.

Good review activity. I did this in a workshop today too as a participant. We were answering get-to-know-you questions and initial ideas about the topic. This is actually a terrific idea. I really enjoy the timed part of it because understanding and knowledge can be assessed in a good way through this without having consequences to this.

Also, the idea of being able to have someone to lay back on with answering the question is also very smart because it causes students to step out of their comfort zone and ask for help because they want to answer the question within the time allowed.
