F or the first time in 50 years, the educational balance among married couples has tipped towards women. Wives are more likely to be the better educated partner than the other way around. This is a big reversal from the 30 year trend between and , when it was the men who were marrying down, educationally speaking. The trend is not necessarily due to the fact that women are smarter than men.
More women than men have been graduating from college at all levels— bachelors, masters and doctoral —for several years, so it was simply a matter of time until the marriage pool reflected that. While most married couples still have similar education levels, that percentage too is dropping. This is despite the increasing tendency of college graduates to marry each other. And so it has continued, so that in , almost as many marriages are made up of two spouses with college degrees

As I drove up to the garage of the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington for an evening event, I locked eyes with a handsome security guard. I found comfort in the nervousness that caused his slip-up — it mirrored my own. This gave me the gumption to inquire about his relationship status and ask for his phone number. The bold act was out of character for me, and I second-guessed it immediately.

S economy is aching for many more highly skilled, technically trained people. Which is to say, they seek potential husbands who have degrees that are more generally esteemed than those earned in a year or two. Same with the kinds of training acquired via apprenticeships or in the armed forces. This is a vital matter because young men who enjoy working with their hands might choose not to pursue careers in construction and manufacturing among other fields , for fear that women will dismiss them out of hand as life partners.
American economic growth and prosperity are already constrained by our having too few skilled men and women in technical occupations. This problem threatens to grow worse as highly skilled Baby Boomers continue to retire at rapid rates — 10, a day, by one estimate — while they are not succeeded by enough younger people who are sufficiently trained. But do women with more-advanced degrees really steer clear of men in the trades and similar fields?
Do they really give men with an A.

My father is a self-employed contractor who often found himself sitting around at home when business was slow and in the nineties, business was slow a lot. My mother never aimed to be the breadwinner of the family. She was raised in poverty in a very traditional household, but she is wickedly smart and made it through a very competitive university program, and she has always out-earned my father. They married at a time when construction was profitable and my father was considered a highly skilled labor.
And my mother has often expressed her regret and dismay that she married my father and became the de facto breadwinner.
when I asked whether they could imagine themselves, after finishing college, marrying someone with substantially less education than theirs.

J ust because something’s not supposed to be said doesn’t mean it isn’t true. It just means you’re not supposed to say it. Unsurprisingly, pointing this out was considered blasphemy by high-profile feminists, such as the ladies on “The View,” but Carlson is absolutely right. No matter how much women earn, they prefer to marry men who earn more than they do. Ergo, women out-earning men in spades today is a problem because marriage rates decline as a result.
Why do you think women continually ask where all the good men have gone? It’s truly insufferable that Carlson’s haters — or as Carlson describes them, those “mindless cultural leaders” who “act like it’s and think the biggest problem American families face is that sexism is preventing millions of housewives from becoming investment bankers or Facebook executives” — blasted him for telling the truth , even though they know perfectly well what he said is true.
It’s those very same mindless leaders to whom Carlson’s observation particularly applies.

It’s widely known that low educational attainment, neighborhood racial segregation, and a biased criminal-justice system are detrimental to Black Americans’ ability to climb the economic ladder. But Richard Reeves, a policy director at the Center on Children and Families at Brookings, has found that marriage also plays a part. Marriage across racial lines has shot up in the past few decades, and a Pew Research Center study found that in about 15 percent of all new marriages in the United States were between couples of different ethnicities, more than double the rate in Asian women were most likely to marry outside their own race, followed by Asian men.
Black women, however, were among the least likely to marry outside their own race. That wouldn’t mean much, except when we consider that Black men have one of the lowest educational attainment rates.
We just want you to think that we’re amazing. Which is why men can date ANYONE — regardless of It wasn’t that he was less educated than you. If a man can’t take the fact that you want someone with a college degree, he needs to.
Today in prescriptive studies about how to conduct your love life: for a lasting marriage, women should pick men who are at least five years older , and have less education. The study was published in the European Journal of Operational Research , which makes marriage sound like a matter of bolts and widgets. And this is essentially how the research — or at least the coverage thereof — treats it.
After interviewing 1, couples whose relationships had lasted five years or more, the researchers found that while the man being at least five years older reduced the chances of divorce, when the woman had five years on her partner, divorce was more than three times as likely. Couples were also more likely to split if they’d been divorced before, but, interestingly, the effect was less if both couples had a divorce behind them.
As a model of good marital decisions, the Telegraph and the BBC both held up Jay-Z and Beyonce — he’s 11 years older than her, and unlike him, she graduated from high school. Obviously this research has some fairly big problems.

While there are 5. The book raises some interesting questions about what we look for in a mate, as well as some alternative solutions for the marriage-minded among us. But Birger also suggests that this “man shortage” might result in a surprising trend: women dating outside their class and education levels. At face value, the suggestion that women date outside their class seems hopelessly old-fashioned, not to mention politically incorrect.
After all, we’re living in the 21st century, not in the highly stratified social world of Downton Abbey. However, the uncomfortable truth is we do gravitate to partners who have the most in common with us, which means we tend to date within our social classes and education levels.

Is it time to widen the search? T here were, says Cat, perhaps one or two male students on her English degree. How great to have so many clever, educated young women spilling out every year, but there could be negative consequences, as a new book, Date-onomics , points out: there may not be enough educated men to go around. But, as the business journalist Jon Birger relates in his book Date-onomics, if an educated woman wants to form a long-term partnership with a man of similar education, the numbers are stacked against her.
But it could just be a numbers game, she says though Birger will say these two things are linked. Birger had started noticing that he was around far more single women than men. I wanted to figure out why. At first he thought it was just a big city problem — perhaps more educated women than men were drawn to New York, where he lives, or cities such as Los Angeles or London.
The numbers are pretty much the same across the United States. Across young people, age 30 and under, [there are] about four college grad women for every three college grad men.
